Welcome to 27 Heartbeats
America's hospitals produce about 5.9 million tons of garbage annually. That's 11,800,000,000 pounds of garbage, and that number doesn't include doctors' offices, dentists' offices, veterinary clinics, eldercare facilities, or the many other medical facilities in the US.
Sure, some of that is really and truly garbage. But a lot of it isn't trash. A lot of it is perfectly useful and exceptionally valuable, if only it could get into the right hands. It may be hard, for logistical and legal reasons, to donate most of the useable material.
But what if we just started with the easy stuff? The stuff that's still in the package. The stuff that's getting cleaned out because it's close to expiration, or because it was in a packet of other single-use items, or because the hospital has changed vendors, or because new samples have come in. What if we tried to save not 10%, not 1%, not even .1%, but just .01% of that garbage. What if we just saved one one-hundredth of a percent? That would still be about 1.2 MILLION POUNDS of medical supplies.
We shouldn't wait for medical facilities to take the initiative. You can reach out and ask their doctor, dentist, orthodontist, hospital, vet, or other medical office to give them the useable items that would otherwise be trashed. And then 27 Heartbeats can help you get them into the hands of an animal or human clinic around the world that is in desperate need of those items. Because somewhere, that almost-expired pair of sterile gloves, sample of heartworm medicine, or open pack of gauze could save a life.
You can make a difference. We can help you do it. Our "lives over landfills" dream is obvious - if instead of creating trash, we can save a life, why wouldn't we?
